Rio Rancho Landfill - Waste Management - Keeping New Mexico Clean

The Rio Rancho Landfill provides disposal services the Rio Rancho community. The facility is operated by Waste Management and meets or exceeds all New Mexico Environmental Department, Solid Waste Division, and environmental standards. The Landfill and accompanying recycling facility are located at 402 Industrial Park Loop, Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

The landfill was established in 1985 to meet the community's waste disposal needs and Waste Management purchased the site in 1988. Over the past 26 years of operation at Rio Rancho Landfill, Waste Management has demonstrated its commitment and ability to exceed the environmental and operational requirements of the New Mexico Environment Department.

Service, support, and commitment to the community are top priorities at Waste Management and, committed to that cause, the local disposal company has given over $10,000.00 annually in donations and sponsorships. The management and employees donate countless volunteer permit to numerous local organizations including not-for-profit organizations, schools and business organizations.

Rio Rancho Landfill is available to provide tours and educational programs for individuals and groups.

In 1990, Waste Management successfully applied for a solid waste permit that specified environmental safeguards including a clay liner, leachate collection systems, groundwater monitoring wells, and a gas monitoring system.

In 1993, Waste Management voluntarily submitted and obtained a permit modification to enhance environmental protections beyond the requirements of the New Mexico Environment Department. This included a state-of-the-art liner system and a final cover. It became one of the first landfills in New Mexico to use this system and meet United States Environmental Protection Agency requirements.

Waste Management has been proactive in minimizing the impact of the landfill on the surrounding community. This includes a litter reduction program on site and in buffer areas. Careful attention has been paid to truck routing and operating hours to minimize the affect operations on surrounding homeowners.
